New Delhi: India designated 23 Pakistan-based individuals as terrorists under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against the backdrop of mounting pressure on Islamabad to address terrorism sponsored by it.

The new list is the biggest, adding 17 Pakistani nationals and six Indians believed to be operating in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

With this new list, a total of 80 individuals have been declared as terrorists under the law to date.

Mohammed Shaheed Faisal, a resident of Bengaluru, against whom the NIA had sought a declaration of terrorism as a declared offender, is in the new list of terrorists.

Authorities have accused him of maintaining links with multiple terror outfits, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Al-Qaeda and ISIS.

The investigators claimed Faisal was instrumental in recruiting young boys, providing terror training in Pakistan.

He is also known for arranging arms deliveries and handling operatives related to the 2024 Rameshwaram Cafe bomb blast.

The MHA’s list also includes some close aides of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed and senior Jaish-e-Mohammed operatives.

The government claimed these individuals were involved in the recruitment of terrorists, cross-border infiltration, and smuggling of weapons through drones.

Also, funding of terrorism, and conspiracy to commit acts of terror against India.

An official said the move under the UAPA provides powers to enhance legal proceedings against the named persons.

Like freezing of their assets, denial of funds, and restriction of financial transactions.

The designation comes as part of the government’s sustained effort to choke Pakistan-based terror networks targeting the country.
