Jharkhand cop arrested for allegedly raping woman inside police station; five suspended

Ranchi: A police constable was arrested for allegedly raping a woman inside a police station in Seraikela-Kharsawan district of Jharkhand. Five policemen, including the station officer-in-charge, were suspended for negligence of duty.

The police said the woman had approached them asking for help after an argument with her husband on the night of October 29.

Afraid of having been ill-treated by her husband, she fled from the home and was accommodated by a neighbour and was also reported to the police. PCR van subsequently rescued her to the police station and she was allocated a room to rest.

According to reports, the accused, who was reportedly a wireless operator attached to the station, reportedly sexually abused her there. The accused constable was arrested and remanded to judicial custody following an investigation.

The seven staff suspended are station officer-in-charge and four other staff.

Police have also seized the accused’s clothes and initiated the process of sending them to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Ranchi for examination.
