Bhubaneswar: Odisha is expected to witness rain during Durga Puja as a new weather system is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal around October 13, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the IMD’s long-range outlook, an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the north Andaman Sea around October 12.

Under its influence, a low-pressure area could develop over the Andaman Sea by October 13 and subsequently move towards the Bay of Bengal.

The system is unlikely to intensify into a depression by October 15 over the southern and adjoining central Bay of Bengal. IMD currently categorized the probability of cyclogenesis in the 1-33% range as a ‘low probability’.

With Durga Puja beginning on October 16, the potential system is being closely watched. If it strengthens over the Bay of Bengal and moves closer to the Odisha coast, rainfall during the Puja period could increase.

But intense rain in the Puja is yet to be proved. The system is still five days away and its present track and intensity and resultant effect on Odisha is uncertain. The models too have not depicted a uniform picture of its possible formation.

The southwest monsoon is likely to retreat from Odisha next week, Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre scientist Sanjeev Dwivedi said.

Although no heavy rain is forecast over the next few days, some locations may experience light to moderate rainfall. The IMD has also issued a thunderstorm and lightning warning in Odisha on October 6 and 7.

The current concern continues to be the weather pattern over the Bay of Bengal from 12 to 15 October, which will decide if Odisha will be rain free or rain during Durga Puja.
