Heavy rain triggers multiple landslides, cuts off key road in Sikkim

New Delhi: Due to multiple landslides, the all-important Geyzing-Legship road that connects Geyzing district headquarters with other states of Sikkim has been rendered impassable.
The Geyzing area of Sikkim received 95.2 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours according to the India Meteorological Department.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Massive boulders and mud debris covered the road near Omchung due to the biggest of all the landslides.
“Within hours after getting the information, the excavators rushed to the spot to clear off the debris to ease the traffic on the road,” a district official said.

Landslides were also reported in two other places on the same road, and people have been cautioned not to use the road till it is restored.
The Geyzing-Legship road is the lifeline for the district, as no other alternative road has been built on this path.
