Over 37,000 killed on India’s 6,358 highway ‘Black Corridors’ in three years

New Delhi: According to the data shared by Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry in the Parliament, more than 37,000 people died on the 6,358 accident black spots called ‘black corridors’ from 2023 to 2025.

A black corridor is a section of highway where there is a high occurrence of fatal and serious road accidents.

The stretches that are termed ‘black corridors’ span across 6,409.7 km in India.

The black corridors were identified with the help of AI-based tools and the accident data recorded on the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR).

The ministry has mentioned that Tamil Nadu tops the list in terms of black corridors with a total of 958 stretches followed by Uttar Pradesh with 671 and Karnataka with 607.

At the district level, Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram had the maximum number of black corridors – 70.

The ministry is taking steps for addressing these issues through various short-term and long-term measures.

These measures include, improved road markings, crash barriers, signage, better junction design, road widening, and construction of underpasses and overpasses.

But it has not revealed the exact number of the black corridors which have been completely addressed and fixed as yet.
