New Delhi: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva claimed a historic fourth term as president with a victory over the son of a former Brazilian leader.
Bolsonaro, the senator who is also the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, was the main rival of Lula.
Victory for the 80-year-old leftist leader is seen as a significant political reversal, busting opinion polls and the ascending power of rightist parties across Latin America.
Lula, who was president from 2003-2011, won re-election in 2023 after defeating Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 vote. The victory was even more notable given the last-minute campaign against surging prices, corruption scandals and unhappiness with the work of the current government.

Lula promoted his government’s achievements in fighting poverty, inequality and unemployment. He also pledged to provide more welfare assistance and free public transport nationwide on weekends if approved by parliament.
His fourth term, though, is likely to be a far more difficult one. The next Congress in Brazil will be the most conservative since the country returned to democracy, and Lula could find it hard to get his policies through.
Lula’s success represents a resounding triumph for the left in the region, as a number of other Latin American nations are opting for right-leaning governments.
