New Delhi: Indian opener Abhishek Sharma is about to break Suryakumar Yadav’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a calendar year in T20 Internationals.

Abhishek has scored 1,125 runs from 37 games this year. He now requires just 40 to overtake Suryakumar’s tally of 1,164 runs that he managed in 2022.

He has the chance to etch his name in the history books when India face New Zealand in the fourth T20I in Auckland on Friday.

This left handed batsman has been in sublime form this year, scoring two centuries and eight fifties at a whopping strike rate of 206.42.

In his recent outing, he scored a quickfire 113 of 38 balls in the third T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand to guide India to a six-wicket win and take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.

At the same time, teammate Ishan Kishan, who has amassed 1,158 runs in 2026’s T20Is to top India’s run-scoring charts in the format this year, will be absent from the final two matches as he recovers from injury.

Abhishek could also move up India’s all-time list of T20I run-scorers, needing 49 runs to go past Hardik Pandya and claim fourth position among India’s highest run-scorers in the format.
