8 Elephants killed, 5 coaches derail as Rajdhani Express hits herd in Assam

Assam: At least eight elephants were killed and one calf injured after the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express collided with a herd crossing the railway line in Jamunamukh – Kampur section in Assam’s Hojai on Saturday morning. At least five coaches of the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express train has also derailed due to the collision, leading to disruption of rail services.

According to sources, the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express struck a herd of elephants while they were crossing the railway line, resulting in the death of the eight elephants and derailment of the locomotive and five coaches.

As per the officials statement, no passenger were injuried or died in the incident. Forest officials confirmed that eight elephants were killed and one calf was rescued following the collision.

The Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express connects Mizoram’s Sairang (near Aizawl) to Anand Vihar Terminal (Delhi).

Following the incident, accident relief trains and railway officials rushed to the spot to initiate rescue operations.
