New-Delhi: Senior Congress MP and leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been acquitted in a defamation case over his remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah at a rally in 2018.

The verdict was passed by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shubham Verma, who said the remarks made by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha were not defamatory.

Gandhi appeared before the court for the pronouncement of the verdict. His supporters welcomed the decision and expressed happiness and gratitude.

Referring to the Sohrabuddin encounter case in 2018, the former Congress president had made some objectionable remarks against Shah, who was the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) back then. “People in India forget that the president of BJP is a murder accused. That’s the truth. The party that talks about honesty, decency, has a person who has been accused of murder as president,” he had said.

The case was filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra, a resident of Hanumanganj under the Kotwali Dehat police station limits in Sultanpur and a former chairman of the Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank.

Mishra filed the complaint on August 4, 2018, over remarks Gandhi made about Shah during a campaign rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
