Bhubaneswar: The cyclone threat over the Bay of Bengal has intensified after a low-pressure area developed into a well-marked low-pressure system over the east-central Bay of Bengal on Saturday morning, October 24.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to intensify into a depression later today.

The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and strengthen into a deep depression on October 25 before developing into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26.

If it develops into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Arnab’, a name proposed by Bangladesh.

The weather system is likely to intensify further and approach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast around the morning of October 28.

Rainfall activity is expected to increase across Odisha. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible in several parts of the state, with extremely heavy rain forecast in isolated areas.

Winds over the sea may reach 45–55 kmph, with gusts up to 65 kmph. Fishermen have been advised to return to shore by the morning of October 24.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has said the state government and district administrations are on alert.

The State Emergency Operation Centre is monitoring the situation, while residents, particularly those in coastal areas, have been advised to follow official IMD updates and government advisories.
