Mayurbhanj: Every village has an identity, and behind that identity often lie fascinating chapters of history, tradition and folklore. Kainsari village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district is one such place, where the story behind its name is intertwined with tales of kings, queens and an ancient military campaign.
Located under Udala block of Mayurbhanj district, Kainsari is not merely a village but a place believed to carry centuries of history. Once known as ‘Kumudasara Garh’, the village is said to have shared a significant historical connection with both central and northern Odisha.
Connection with Gajapati Purushottama Deva’s Kanchi Abhiyan
One of the most fascinating stories associated with Kainsari takes us back to the reign of Gajapati King Purushottama Deva and his famous Kanchi Abhiyan.
According to local accounts, Basanta Birat, the then ruler of Kainsari Garh, accompanied Gajapati Purushottama Deva during the Kanchi Abhiyan.
Following the victory in the war, it is said that the Gajapati king arranged the marriage of his two sisters, Hansabati and Kalarabati, to Basanta Birat.
The episode forms an important part of the local narrative surrounding the village and its royal past, with the story being passed down through generations.
How Did Kainsari Get Its Name?
The story behind the name ‘Kainsari’ is perhaps the most interesting part of the village’s folklore.

According to local legend, Queen Hansabati had a deep affection for ‘Kain’ flowers and ‘Sari’ birds. It is believed that the two names—Kain and Sari—were eventually combined to give the village its present name, Kainsari.
Interestingly, while Sari birds are reportedly no longer commonly seen in the village, Kain flowers continue to bloom in several ponds across the area. For villagers, the flowers serve as a living reminder of the centuries-old legend associated with their homeland.
Every corner of the village, therefore, seems to carry echoes of a glorious past and stories that have survived through generations.
Where History and Folklore Come Together
Kainsari represents a fascinating blend of history, tradition and oral folklore. From stories of royal families and military campaigns to the intriguing origin of the village’s name, each narrative has contributed to its distinct identity.
The tales surrounding Kainsari also demonstrate how local traditions preserve memories of the past even when written historical records may be limited.
With its stories of kings and queens, its association with the Kanchi Abhiyan and the Kain flowers that continue to bloom in its ponds, Kainsari remains a fascinating destination for those interested in Odisha’s lesser-known history and heritage.
