Bhubaneswar: Tensions escalated at Utkal University in Vani Vihar in the State Capital city after a loud bang resembling a bomb explosion triggered panic on campus late Sunday night.

As per reports, the incident reportedly took place around 11:30 PM near the university’s Boys’ Hostel No. 1. The loud sound prompted students on campus to run in different directions.

Students associated with the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), who were campaigning, accused ABVP members of hurling a bomb. Meanwhile, Police are investigating whether the sound was caused by a bomb or a firecracker.

Following the incident, students gathered outside Boys’ Hostel No. 1 and raised slogans. BCJD members later gheraoed the university’s main gate, demanding action over the incident.

Bhubaneswar DCP, ACP-level officers and armed police personnel reached the spot and held discussions with the protesting students. BCJD representatives also submitted a memorandum to the DCP.

The DCP later visited Boys’ Hostel No. 1 and inspected the area from where the sound was reportedly heard. Police said further investigation would be carried out on Monday to establish the exact cause of the incident.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions on the Utkal University campus over the upcoming students’ union elections.
