Udala: A seven-hour shutdown was observed in Udala on Friday following a bandh call over demands related to infrastructure development and urban expansion projects in the town.
The shutdown, which was observed from 6 am to 1 pm, affected normal life as shops, business establishments, government and private offices, and public transport services remained closed during the period. Bus services were also impacted, causing inconvenience to commuters and travellers.
The bandh was reportedly called in support of the construction of National Highway-19 and the relocation of roadside shops to facilitate the planned development of the Notified Area Council (NAC). Supporters of the move argued that the projects are necessary to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and support the town’s future growth.

During the shutdown, local residents and traders were seen monitoring the situation, while authorities kept a close watch to ensure that the bandh remained peaceful.
Proponents of the development projects believe that widening road infrastructure and reorganising commercial spaces will help modernise the town and create better facilities for residents. However, some affected shopkeepers have expressed concerns over relocation and its impact on their livelihoods.
The shutdown highlighted the ongoing debate between development needs and the concerns of those likely to be affected by the proposed changes. Officials are expected to continue discussions with stakeholders as plans for the highway project and NAC development move forward.
