Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure system is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 24, raising questions about its possible intensification and impact on Odisha.

While some weather models indicate the possibility of the system strengthening into a depression or deep depression, others suggest that it may remain relatively weak. Its eventual track and intensity remain uncertain.

According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Tropical Weather Outlook issued on October 19, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is present over the Gulf of Thailand and adjoining areas. The system is expected to move towards the Andaman Sea by October 21. Under its influence, a low-pressure area may form over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 24.

Meanwhile, another cyclonic circulation is active over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the north Tamil Nadu coast. Meteorologists are closely monitoring developments over the Bay of Bengal as atmospheric conditions evolve.

At present, there is no confirmed indication of a cyclone threat to Odisha from this developing system. Its potential impact will depend on whether the low-pressure area forms, how strongly it intensifies and which direction it subsequently takes.

If the system develops and moves closer to the eastern coast, its effects on Odisha could become clearer through updated forecasts of rainfall, wind conditions and coastal weather. However, it is too early to determine the extent or distribution of any possible rainfall over the state.

Weather models are expected to provide greater clarity on the system’s structure, intensity and movement between October 24 and 26. Forecasts issued after the low-pressure area forms will be particularly important in assessing whether it poses any significant risk to Odisha or neighbouring coastal regions.
