8 killed in Kolkata warehouse collapse, five arrested

Kolkata: At least 8 people lost their lives after under-constructed warehouse collapsed in  in Taratala area in Kolkata, West Bengal  yesterday.

The local Kolkata police have arrested 5 people who gave civic approval including project’s supervisor, iron structure fabricator, land lessee and a broker, according to reports.

The arrested persons are identified as Gulzar Hussain, Kamal Samanto,  Sambhunath Behera, Dibakar Bhandari, and Abdul Hamid.

Following the incident, Kolkata Police created a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the incident and what led to the collapse of the three-storey warehouse.

The SIT is going to examine the case in every prospect that includes the structure, quality of materials that were used to construct the godown, approval process in the making, execution of the construction.

The victims of the collapse lost their lives after being buried under tonnes of concrete and twisted steel. Around 20 workers are rescued and taken to hospital for possible medical treatment.

A bunch of emergency services such as Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Civil Defence, disaster management teams, the NDRF and the Army came together for the rescue operation in this case.

The incident has alerted the government and the Chief Minister of Kolkata have urged to check upon all the under construction buildings that were approved during the previous ruling government. The construction to remain halted until the end of July.

This incident occurred when several workers were engaged in construction work at the under construction structure when the roof reportedly fell off. The warehouse was of three floors.

Further investigation into this matter is underway.
