Goa: In an effort to translate energy research into scalable commercial solutions, India is launching a National Hydrocarbon Technology Hub designed to anchor research and development across the country’s oil and gas landscape.

Alok Tripathi, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), disclosed the strategic initiative on Wednesday while speaking on the sidelines of the 29th Energy Technology Meet (ETM) 2026 in Goa.

Tripathi explained that the hub is structured to serve as an umbrella framework connecting academia, state research laboratories, and industry operators. Its primary mandate will be to systematically compress the timeline required to shepherd indigenous innovations from bench-scale experimental phases into competitive, market-ready deployments.

To reinforce institutional capability, the petroleum ministry has established collaborative agreements with premier domestic academic centers. These partnerships include formal memorandums of understanding signed with various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) alongside the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT).

The development directly reflects the broader mandate of this year’s summit, organized under the banner “From Research to Commercialization.” Sector leaders and policymakers at the venue focused heavily on identifying friction points that traditionally stall energy-tech deployment and developing streamlined transfer pipelines.

The three-day gathering registered broad industry engagement, drawing in excess of 2,500 delegates and featuring roughly 250 expert speakers. Alongside technical presentations, an associated industrial exposition highlighted operational technologies across upstream exploration, midstream logistics, and downstream refining, with dedicated showcases demonstrating progress in green molecules, including compressed biogas (CBG).
