Bhubaneswar: In the Nayapalli Sexual Assault, the accused came to steal, raped woman, said Police Commissioner.
The accused in the Nayapalli rape case had initially entered the victim’s house with the intention of committing theft but later allegedly sexually assaulted her, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh said on Saturday.
According to the Police Commissioner, the accused had earlier conducted a recce of the victim’s house and subsequently entered the premises after finding an opportunity. He had allegedly covered his face with a red ‘gamucha’ and threatened the woman with a lighter gun.
After the alleged sexual assault, the accused reportedly walked to CRPF Square and boarded an Ama Bus to reach Fire Station Square. He then went to Unit-I, where he allegedly stole a motorcycle.
The accused subsequently travelled to the house where he was staying at Chakeisiani before fleeing to Ganjam. He later returned to Cuttack, police said.
Acting on information about his presence in the Chandaka area, police launched a pursuit to apprehend him. According to the Police Commissioner, the accused allegedly attempted to attack police personnel with a screwdriver, following which police opened fire.

Police reportedly fired two rounds, and the accused sustained a bullet injury to his left leg. He was subsequently taken for medical treatment.
The Police Commissioner further said that a lighter gun and the motorcycle were seized from the encounter spot.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
