Moscow: Russian air defence systems reportedly intercepted dozens of Ukrainian drones approaching Moscow overnight, as drone activity disrupted flight operations at several airports serving the Russian capital.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defence units intercepted 57 drones in the Moscow region between 10:46 pm and 12:09 am local time.

The reported number was later raised to 74, according to media reports. These figures could not be independently verified

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency imposed temporary restrictions on arrivals and departures at Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports on safety grounds.

Authorities later lifted restrictions at Zhukovsky, while operations at the other airports remained subject to temporary measures. Two flights travelling from Turkey to Moscow reportedly turned back because of the restrictions at Vnukovo.

Local accounts cited by media outlets also reported explosions near Naro-Fominsk, southwest of Moscow.

Russian emergency services were reportedly deployed to locations where drones had been intercepted. No casualties or damage had been officially reported in Moscow in the initial accounts

The latest incident comes amid repeated drone attacks around Moscow this month, highlighting continuing aerial strikes between Russia and Ukraine despite renewed diplomatic efforts to restart peace negotiations.
