Colombia earthquake: Death toll rises to 132 after powerful 7.4 magnitude quake

New Delhi: As many as 132 people were killed and over 570 others were injured following a strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook western Colombia on Monday.

The powerful earthquake hit at around 7:34 AM in local time. Its epicenter was located near San Jos del Palmar in the Choc department – some 400km west of the capital Bogot.

Shocks of the earthquake could be felt in many parts of the country including Bogot, Medelln, Cali and Manizales.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake, which was centered near the western city of Cali, is reported to have caused significant structural damage.

More than 1,600 homes are damaged and 61 collapsed fully, a local official estimated from initial surveys.

Most towns have reported damage including the cities of Cali, Pereira, Quibd and Manizales while the rescue effort is underway.

Experts have rushed to areas that may be vulnerable following the earthquake with plans in place to move to areas less severely hit when they have assessed what’s available.

Authorities have rushed with emergency teams to the badly impacted parts of the continent and search efforts are ongoing throughout Thursday.

The powerful magnitude-7.4 quake is considered significant for Colombia and damage can be widespread.
