Mumbai: James Burrows, the celebrated television director behind some of the most popular sitcoms in TV history, has died at the age of 85.
During a career that spanned decades, he worked on several iconic comedy shows, including Cheers, Taxi, F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Will & Grace, Frasier, The Bob Newhart Show, and Mike & Molly, making him one of the most respected figures in television comedy.
His family confirmed the news in a statement to people, saying that he “passed away peacefully today, surrounded by his family.” The statement added that he was with his loved ones at the time of his passing. No additional details were shared regarding the cause of death or the location where he died.
For several decades, James Burrows had a long and influential career, where he became a major force in television comedy.
He was closely linked to many of the most popular sitcoms ever made.

Burrows collected several major honours during his career. He has won 11 Emmy Awards, his first two were consecutive wins in 1980 and 1981 for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Taxi. He also received five Directors Guild of America Awards for his work.
In 2015, he received the Directors Guild of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his enduring impact on television directing.
Burrows started his television career in 1974 on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He went on to direct more than 50 TV pilots, helping define the look of the modern American sitcom.
He was also a co-creator of “Cheers,” which became one of the most successful and influential comedy series in TV history.
