Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has intensified its cyclone preparedness measures, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi deputing eight ministers to vulnerable districts ahead of the approaching Cyclone Arnab.

The ministers will remain stationed in their assigned districts from October 27 to 29 to coordinate with local administrations and monitor emergency arrangements.

The weather system over the Bay of Bengal is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the forenoon of October 28 as a very severe cyclonic storm.

Although a direct landfall in Odisha is not currently forecast, the state is preparing for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

The Chief Minister has assigned the following ministers to oversee preparedness:

Koraput: Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Rayagada: Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, Kandhamal: Rabi Narayan Naik, Ganjam: Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, Nabarangpur: Krushna Chandra Patra, Malkangiri: Nityananda Gond, Kalahandi: Mukesh Mahaling, Gajapati: Suryabanshi Suraj

Their responsibilities include reviewing safety measures, coordinating with district officials and ensuring a prompt response to emergencies.

The IMD has issued a red warning for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri for October 28, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Other districts, including Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh and Sundargarh, have also been placed under an orange alert.

The state has mobilised disaster-response teams, prepared cyclone shelters and directed officials to facilitate the relocation of people from vulnerable and low-lying areas if required.

Schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in the five red-alert districts are scheduled to remain closed on October 28 and 29. Fishermen have also been advised to stay away from the sea.

The police administration will also play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and carrying out relief operations during the cyclone.

Districts have been instructed to provide regular information to the media regarding the situation and preparedness related to the cyclone.
