930 People Dead In Congo’s Ebola Outbreak!

New Delhi: At least 930 people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ebola outbreak, the country’s Ministry of Health said Monday, with 37 new deaths recorded in a 24-hour span from Friday into Saturday.

The deaths were recorded out of 2,344 confirmed cases as of Saturday, the ministry said.

The outbreak, declared on May 15 in eastern Congo, is being called the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record. It is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which is less common and currently has no approved vaccine or treatment.

The World Health Organization last week warned that 80 per cent of new Ebola cases were emerging from unknown chains of transmission, a sign the outbreak is spreading faster than officials can track despite an expanding response.

Ebola spreads through contact with bodily fluids and contaminated materials. The disease is rare but severe and often fatal.

Neighboring countries including Uganda and Zambia have stepped up border screening and surveillance amid the outbreak.
