Bhubaneswar: “With the blessings of Lord Jagannath, we will achieve ‘zero casualties’ this time as well,” said Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi while speaking to the media today at Lok Seva Bhawan, following a review meeting on the preparedness for the impending cyclone Arnab.

The Chief Minister noted that the state possesses prior experience in handling floods and cyclones. He highlighted the successful management of cyclones ‘Dana’ and ‘Mocha’, in addition to the effective handling of various flood situations.

Therefore, the Chief Minister affirmed that, as in the past, the State Government is fully prepared to ensure ‘zero casualties’ this time too. He stated that, according to the Meteorological Department, the cyclone is expected to make landfall between North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha on October 28. However, there is a higher probability of it making landfall along the coast of Andhra Pradesh.

As a result, various districts in the state are likely to experience heavy rainfall, accompanied by wind speeds of approximately 80 to 90 kmph, he informed adding that districts in South Odisha, in particular, are expected to face more intense rain and stronger winds.

He further said, “Districts such as Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri are likely to be the most affected. Other coastal districts are also expected to experience rainfall. It has been decided to keep schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers closed in these five districts on the 28th and 29th. In other districts, District Collectors will decide on declaring holidays for schools and colleges after assessing the situation.”

It is reported that 225 Fire Service units are also on alert. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea. Instructions have been issued to ensure the availability of anti-snake venom, medicines, and medical kits at all healthcare centers in the affected areas.

All engineering departments are fully prepared for immediate restoration work in the event of a cyclone. Specifically, comprehensive arrangements have been made to promptly clear any trees that may fall and obstruct roads.

As the harvest season approaches, the Chief Minister has advised that farmers be alerted in advance and encouraged to harvest their crops and store them safely. The Chief Minister has advised all relevant departments of the State Government to coordinate and address the cyclone situation by adopting a ‘Whole of Government’ approach.
