New Delhi: In an extraordinary operation, emergency personnel rescued a man who was trapped under rubble at a collapsed building in La Guaira, Venezuela, for eight days.

The survivor, Hernn Alberto Gil Flores, who is a security guard in his 40s, was buried under close to 29 feet (8.8 meters) of rubble after the parking lot structure of the Galerias Playa Grande shopping mall came down in the quake.

Teams of rescuers from several countries worked 67 hours tunneling carefully through the rubble, which was unstable.

They managed to keep Mr Flores alive by feeding him food, water, and medicine through a pipe as they slowly worked towards freeing him.

The man, who survived conscious, was then brought to a hospital.

The operation, officials stated, was incredibly complicated, while UN officials termed it close to a miracle and also “rare” for a man to survive for eight days under a collapsing building.
