New Delhi:  Two people were killed and six others injured after Houthi forces attacked Yemen’s Al-Maashiq presidential palace in the southern port city of Aden yesterday.

Reports said the assault used missiles and drones while the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, said they carried it out.
The strike reportedly hit the government of Yemen’s prime minister and officials in Aden.

There were at least six blasts near the president’s palace, which is the official seat of Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

Residents fled the area after hearing explosions in the vicinity of the compound and around its security gates, witnesses said.

The shooting was the most serious escalation of the ongoing battle between Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed forces.

The rebels said the plant was connected to Saudi police and weapon caches, but the claims could not be corroborated by other sources.

Yemeni officials said the strike resulted in casualties among security forces.

The strike follows new fighting between Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed government forces and clashes have escalated in various parts of Yemen.

Issues of regional security have also been discussed in relation to the conflict, given the Houthi attack, as well as the armed response, on key transport infrastructure.

Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since 2014, when Houthi forces took control of the capital, Sanaa, which triggered a Saudi-led military intervention the following year.

Following a truce in 2022, a lull in the fighting has now ended and fighting has resumed, resulting in further deterioration of humanitarian conditions and making it more difficult to reach impacted areas with critical relief supplies.
