NBC News: Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic primary

Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate running in Michigan's Democratic Primary, has defeated centrist Congresswoman Haley Stevens and will face Republican Mike Rogers this fall. Stevens, supported by the party's establishment, was beaten despite outspending El-Sayed by 11 to 1.

El-Sayed overcame a nearly $65 million onslaught of outside money and an establishment that had rallied around Stevens. Popular Gov. Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Stevens late last month — a move seen as a last-ditch effort to stop a rising El-Sayed.

El-Sayed, a former public health official, goes on to face former Rep. Mike Rogers, who claimed the Republican nomination without opposition Tuesday. Their race in November is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country, and it could determine which party controls the Senate.

Only NBC News has called it, though, and other media are holding off. He's about 2% ahead with 90% of votes counted. El-Sayed was doing well in some polls, but beating the establishment candidate in a swing state against overwhelming financial and and organizational resources wasn't the expected outcome. The New York Times, notably, is fact-checking a victory that it doesn't think has happened:

The Michigan Democratic Senate race has not yet been called by the Associated Press or The Times, by Abdul El-Sayed is trying to turn the day after the primary — typically one of the biggest fundraising days of a campaign — into a fundraising bonanza. "We won," reads a fundraising email sent by his campaign Wednesday morning.

Here's Politico, also hinting he has in fact lost (though its editorial position has stretched this morning to suggest that anything short of an unlikely landslide was a loss)

It's all very well to complain that he is less favored to win in the general, but if a mainstream centrist with infinite money and all the big guns can't beat a progressive Muslim in a purple-state primary, it's not the left that should be worried.
