Russell Brand charged in another rape and sexual assault
by Rob Beschizza · Boing BoingFormer comedian Russell Brand, already facing charges of rape, sexual assault and indecent assault, was charged Tuesday with another rape and another sexual assault. The BBC, citing a statement from the Crown Prosecution Service, reports that each charge concerns two separate women and incidents that occured in 2009. Brand, 50, is scheduled to appear in court Jan 20, 2026, on the new charges; his trial on the earlier five charges is scheduled for June 2026.
Mr Brand, of Oxfordshire, is accused of raping one woman in Bournemouth in 1999, and indecently assaulting another in the Westminster area in 2001. A third charge alleges he sexually assaulted a woman in Westminster between 2004 and 2005, while the remaining counts relate to the alleged oral rape and sexual assault of an additional woman in 2004 in the Westminster area Det Ch Insp Tariq Farooqi from the Metropolitan Police has said the women who have made reports are receiving support from specially trained officers
Brand, an international star at the height of his fame, was the subject of exposés in the Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches in 2023, which detailed years of pestilent behavior. Five women subsequently accused Brand of assaults and emotional abuse, ultimately leading to criminal charges in the U.K. and at least one lawsuit in the U.S. They were not the first accusations, it soon emerged.
In a 2006 interview, Dannii Minogue said Brand had sexually harassed her after she appeared on his TV show. She described him as "a bit of a vile predator", adding: "I certainly don't think he has cured his sex addiction." She said that Brand "wouldn't take no for an answer" and "throughout the whole interview he kept making shocking remarks that I can't even repeat" … From 2006 to 2008 Brand received five complaints while he was a BBC radio host and presenter of both sexual misconduct and unprofessional workplace behaviour.
With film and television work dried up, has has since worked as a pitchman for anti-electromagnet amulets, among other gigs.
