Security tightened around vital installations across Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 21: Amid a heightened security vigil across Kashmir, particularly along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, authorities have further strengthened the security of vital installations in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley, with a comprehensive security audit currently underway, officials said.

Senior officials in the security establishment said that surveillance has been significantly enhanced around critical infrastructure, including government buildings, power and water installations, communication hubs, transportation facilities, and other sensitive locations.

The measures form part of a broader, precautionary strategy to thwart any attempt by inimical elements to exploit prevailing conditions.

“The security of all vital installations is being reviewed and reinforced. Surveillance systems have been upgraded, access control tightened, and deployment patterns revised based on threat assessments,” a senior official told Greater Kashmir. “The audit is aimed at identifying and plugging any potential vulnerabilities.”

The move comes in the backdrop of enhanced security arrangements across Kashmir, with additional forces deployed, extra checkpoints established, and joint area domination exercises being conducted by the Police and other security agencies.

Particular focus has been placed on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Kashmir’s lifeline, where intensified frisking, vehicle checks, and round-the-clock surveillance are in place.

In Srinagar, security personnel have increased patrolling around strategic and high-footfall areas, while CCTV monitoring and real-time surveillance have been strengthened.

Officials said night patrols have also been intensified, and response teams are on heightened alert to deal with any contingency.

“The current measures are preventive in nature. Given the overall security scenario, we are ensuring that vital installations are well-protected and that there is no room for complacency,” another senior officer said.

Along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, authorities have set up additional checkpoints at vulnerable stretches, with thorough vehicle inspections and verification of travel documents.

Security agencies are coordinating closely to monitor suspicious movement and ensure uninterrupted and secure traffic flow.

Officials said the ongoing security audit involves coordination between multiple agencies, including Police, intelligence units, and technical teams, to assess manpower deployment, surveillance coverage, access protocols, and emergency response mechanisms.

Officials stressed that public cooperation remains crucial.

“People are requested to cooperate with security personnel during checks and remain vigilant. Any suspicious activity should be immediately reported,” the official said.

Authorities said the heightened vigil and audit process would continue based on ground assessments and intelligence inputs, underlining that the objective is to maintain peace, protect critical infrastructure, and ensure the safety of citizens amid evolving security challenges.
