New Delhi, May 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm wishes to the people of Sikkim on the occasion of their Statehood Day, marking a milestone 50 years since the northeastern state joined the Indian Union.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said: “Warm greetings to the people of Sikkim on their Statehood Day! This year, the occasion is even more special as we mark the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s statehood! Sikkim is associated with serene beauty, rich cultural traditions and industrious people.

It has made strides in diverse sectors. May the people of this beautiful state continue to prosper.”

The Prime Minister’s message comes as the state celebrates half a century of its statehood, a period during which Sikkim has transformed into a model of ecological preservation, tourism, organic farming, and sustainable development. Known for its picturesque landscapes, biodiversity, and harmonious cultural fabric, Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975, following a historic referendum.
