The cause of death of tragic Liam Payne has been given by an Argentinian ambulance chief. A post mortem has not been carried out but in an update, a director of El Sistema de Atención Médica de Emergencias, known as SAME, the country’s emergency medical service explained what injuries Liam had received.

Local police said the 31-year-old singer fell from the third floor into the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood of Argentina’s capital, before medics confirmed his death. According to police in Buenos Aires, officers were initially responding to reports “of an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol”.

Pictures showed shocked fans gathering outside the hotel after police cordoned off the area, with forensic investigators in white protective suits and blue gloves seen entering and leaving.

SAME director Alberto Crescenti said that sadly Liam had suffered a ‘fractured skull base’ and added that the fall from the third floor of his hotel had left him with unsurvivable injuries. He said: Speaking to TN he said: “Within minutes a SAME team arrived and confirmed the death of this man, who we later found out was a member of a musical group,” He said the injuries were so severe they paramedics weren’t able to resuscitate him. “There was no possibility of doing anything,” said Crescenti, who said he will have to wait for the results of the autopsy to determine how the event that led to the death of the 31-year-old singer occurred.

The fall would have been 13 or 14 metres, according to Crescenti. “According to what the team saw, he had a fractured skull base. The injuries were very serious,” he added.

In dialogue with LN+, journalist José ‘Tucu’ Correa gave details of how they reconstructed the singer’s last six minutes. “17.01 the hotel manager, Sebastián, calls 911. That call lasts 2 minutes 33 seconds, in which he explains and says ‘we are afraid he will do something or make an attempt on his life’. 17.04 ends that call. Within a minute a patrol car was arriving. 17.07 the patrol car radioed that the person who had fallen was dead,’ he said. He then explained that the manager of the establishment had said that he had felt a very strong impact at the back of the hotel and told what happened next: ‘17.07 the fire brigade was dispatched, they were the first to arrive and 17.12 SAME arrived.”

Pictures showed shocked fans gathering outside the hotel after police cordoned off the area, with forensic investigators in white protective suits and blue gloves seen entering and leaving. Fans were photographed lighting candles and leaving flowers at the side of the road in an impromptu vigil as they paid tribute to the music star.

The Foreign Office confirmed it is in contact with authorities in Argentina “regarding reports of the death of a British man”. But a spokesman declined to comment any further, including on the identity of the man involved.
