New Toyota Hilux India Launch 28th July – More Capable, More Tech, More Safety
by Satya Singh · RushLaneWhile getting a more contemporary profile and new equipment, the new-gen Hilux is expected to retain its performance specifications
Toyota had premiered the all-new 9th-gen Hilux last year in November. It is now scheduled for launch in India on 28th July. The new model will continue with the IMV ladder-frame platform, maintaining its proven off-road capabilities and keeping costs down.
9th-gen Hilux – What’s new?
New Toyota Hilux gets a sportier presence, with most of the changes centred at the front. Key updates include a new gloss black trim with ‘TOYOTA’ lettering, connecting the headlamps. The massive hexagonal grille seen with the current 8th-gen model has been replaced with a contemporary body-coloured unit. A more angular and rugged design approach has been used for the bumper. The pickup also gets a new skid plate.
Side profile remains largely unchanged, although the squared wheel arches could be more sharply defined. New Hilux is also expected to get a new design for the alloy wheels. At the rear, updates are expected for the LED tail lamps and bumper. Following the updated aesthetics seen at the front, the rear could also get ‘TOYOTA’ lettering. Some new colour options could be introduced with the new Hilux.
Interior updates
Inside too, a more modern and sharper design approach is clearly evident. Curvy dashboard panels seen with the current model have been replaced with straight lines, resulting in a sharper aesthetic. A similar approach is also noticeable with the new steering wheel and the updated centre console.
New equipment added to the 9th-gen Hilux includes dual 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and instrument console. For everyday practicality, the new Hilux continues to offer physical buttons for frequently used controls and functions. Other key features include dual zone climate control, powered and ventilated front seats and wireless charging. Safety kit will have features like a 360 degree camera and radar based ADAS suite.
New Hilux – Performance
9th-gen Hilux will continue with the same platform and powertrain options. Relevant updates have been introduced for the chassis to ensure enhanced rigidity and improved stability and ride comfort. The existing 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine will be carried over. It generates 204 PS and 500 Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
It remains to be seen if the new Hilux also gets a 48V mild-hybrid system with this engine, as currently used with the Fortuner Neo Drive variant. Across global markets, the 9th-gen Hilux is also available in BEV format. This is Toyota’s first body-on-frame BEV. It is equipped with a 59.2 kWh battery pack and dual electric motors. WLTP certified range is around 260 km. It is not certain if the Hilux BEV will be offered in India.
With the updates and new equipment, the 9th-gen Toyota Hilux is expected to be offered at a slightly higher price. The current 8th-gen Hilux is available in the price range of Rs 28.52 lakh to Rs 36 lakh. New Hilux will continue to rival the Isuzu V-Cross.
