BYD has officially unveiled the new Dolphin G DM-i, a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback developed specifically for European markets. Unlike many Chinese brands that adapt existing domestic products for global markets, the Dolphin G has been engineered with Europe in mind from the start.

The new hatchback combines BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid technology with a compact footprint, targeting buyers who want EV-like driving characteristics without fully relying on charging infrastructure. Deliveries are expected to begin in Europe later in 2026. Pricing has not been revealed, but is expected to undercut the Honda Jazz Hybrid by a big margin, which retails in the UK at (GBP 28,475 or Rs 36.65 lakhs).

Interestingly, this development also comes just days after BYD India teased its DM-i hybrid technology on social media, marking the first official indication that the company could soon introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles in India as well.

Dolphin G DM-i – Compact Hatch With Over 1,000 KM Range

Positioned in Europe’s B-segment hatchback space, the Dolphin G DM-i measures 4,160 mm in length and will rival models like Volkswagen Polo, Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris. Unlike most rivals that use mild-hybrid or strong-hybrid setups, the Dolphin G gets a full plug-in hybrid system. BYD claims the hatchback can deliver a combined driving range of over 1,000 km (621 miles), significantly higher than many fully electric hatchbacks currently sold in Europe.

Expected Powertrain Details

The company says the DM-i system prioritises electric driving while using the petrol engine mainly for extending range and improving long-distance usability. While complete technical specifications are yet to be announced, the Dolphin G DM-i is expected to use a similar setup to the globally sold Atto 2 DM-i SUV. The setup is likely to include:

– 1.5-litre petrol engine
– Front-mounted electric motor
– BYD Blade Battery technology

Globally, the Atto 2 DM-i offers outputs between 164 PS and 212 PS depending on variant. It is available with 7.8 kWh and 18 kWh battery pack options, delivering EV-only range between 40 km and 90 km. In typical DM-i fashion, the petrol engine mainly works as a generator for the battery pack, while the electric motor handles most driving duties. At higher speeds, the engine can also directly assist propulsion for better efficiency.

Could Be Produced In Europe

Reports suggest the Dolphin G DM-i could become one of the first BYD models to be produced at the company’s upcoming manufacturing facility in Szeged, Hungary. Other models expected from this plant include Dolphin Surf, Atto 2 and Atto 3. Local production would help BYD better compete with European rivals while reducing dependence on imports from China.

BYD India DM-i Teaser – Sealion 6 Or Atto 2?

While the Dolphin G itself is unlikely for India anytime soon, BYD’s recent teaser for the Indian market suggests the company is preparing to introduce its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology here as well.

Earlier this week, BYD India shared teaser posts mentioning “BYD DM-i” and “Super Plug-in Hybrid EV”. This came after both the Sealion 6 PHEV and Atto 2 crossover were spotted testing in India. Globally, both these SUVs are already offered with DM-i hybrid powertrains:

– Sealion 6 DM-i is a mid-size SUV with premium positioning and AWD options

– Atto 2 DM-i is a more compact SUV offering EV-like driving with hybrid flexibility

Among the two, the Atto 2 could be more suitable for Indian urban buyers due to its smaller dimensions and potentially lower pricing. The Sealion 6, meanwhile, would target the premium SUV segment. Currently, BYD India sells only EVs including Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7 and eMAX 7. Introduction of DM-i hybrids would mark the brand’s first move beyond pure electric vehicles in the Indian market.
