Next-Gen Hyundai i20 Teased – Gets Lamborghini-Like LED Signature
by Satya Singh · RushLaneIn line with evolving consumer preferences, the new Hyundai i20 adopts a more angular profile and a slightly boxier aesthetic
Hyundai is working on the 4th-gen version of the i20, which is expected to be launched later this year. Test mules have been spotted frequently during road tests in recent months. In the latest development, Hyundai has teased the new i20 for Brazil. The image shared reveals that the new i20 is a lot quirkier and sportier than its predecessor.
New i20 lighting setup teased
In the teaser posted by Hyundai Brazil, one can see new Y-shaped LED DRLs, placed horizontally, sort of like a Lamborghini Revuelto. The hatch also gets an interconnecting full-width LED bar. One can also notice distinctive rectangular headlamps. These features have already been seen with test mules of i20. New-gen i20 has a more upright front fascia and a new grille design.
Side profile has also undergone some significant changes including more angular and sharper door and window frames and roofline. While the circular wheel arches have been retained, the hatch gets sportier alloy wheels. At the rear, the new i20 is expected to get Y-shaped tail lamps, something similar to the lighting elements at the front. The bumper section at the front and rear are expected to be refreshed as well.
New i20 may see some gains in size across international markets. For example, the hatch could be taller in Brazil. In India, the new i20 will maintain its sub-4-meter length to qualify for tax benefits. The current model is 3,995 mm long, 1,775 mm wide, 1,505 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. Hyundai currently manufactures the i20 in India and Turkey.
With the 4th-gen model, Hyundai will start manufacturing the hatch in Brazil as well. It will be manufactured at Hyundai’s Piracicaba plant in São Paulo. Hyundai’s Brazilian plant already manufactures other models like HB20, HB20S and Creta. The HB20 and Creta are Hyundai’s bestselling models in Brazil.
Interior upgrades, new features
Matching the exterior design, the interiors of the new i20 are expected to receive a sharper, more contemporary makeover. Tech package is also expected to receive a major upgrade, featuring the Pleos Connect infotainment and connectivity system. However, this has not yet been confirmed officially. One of the test mules spotted earlier was seen with curved dual screens.
Pleos Connect uses a large central display, integrating various functions of the infotainment and instrument console. This was recently spotted with the new Creta. Feature upgrades expected with the new-gen i20 include a fresh interior theme and updated upholstery. The hatch is expected to get a 360 degree surround view camera and Level 2 ADAS package.
Across international markets, the 4th-gen Hyundai i20 could have the option of a hybrid powertrain. In India, the existing 1.2-litre petrol engine is expected to be carried over. It generates 83 PS with the 5-speed manual transmission and 88 PS with the iVT unit. Max torque output is 114.7 Nm. i20 N Line has a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that makes 120 PS and 172 Nm. Transmission choices include 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT.
