New Suzuki 1.2L Turbo Engine – 125 Bhp, 230 Nm, E100, CNG, CBG Compatibility

Suzuki’s new turbo petrol engine programme was announced last week. Now more information has emerged from Japan. It is an all new 1.2-litre engine delivering 93 kW (125 bhp) and 230 Nm. It will be compatible with E100 flex fuel as well as CNG/CBG.
New 1.2L Turbo – Performance And Efficiency
Referred to as DITC, the new direct-injection turbo engine could broaden Maruti Suzuki’s future powertrain choices, with Suzuki explicitly identifying India among the programme’s intended growth markets. The new engine is based on Suzuki’s three-cylinder Z12E architecture. It incorporates a variable-geometry turbocharger and a water-cooled intercooler, with the latter developed with hot operating environments such as India in mind.
It will have thermal efficiency exceeding 40%, while Suzuki’s presentation outlines an ambition to reach 50% by reducing engine losses. Development areas include cooling, exhaust, mechanical and pumping losses. Together, these technologies indicate that Suzuki is pursuing stronger performance while retaining its focus on fuel efficiency.
Could Help Address Maruti’s Petrol Power Gap
Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza presents a potential application for the new engine. Its current 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol produces approximately 109 bhp and 170 Nm. At around 125 bhp and 230 Nm, Suzuki’s new 1.2-litre DITC would represent an increase of approximately 16 bhp and 60 Nm, if introduced with the displayed specifications.
That could strengthen Brezza’s position against its turbo petrol rivals. Tata Nexon’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo produces around 118 bhp and 170 Nm, while the Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue offer approximately 118 bhp and 172 Nm from their 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo engines.
E100, CNG And CBG Add India Relevance
Alternative-fuel capability is another important part of the programme. The new engine is compatible with petrol extending up to E100 flex fuel, alongside CNG and compressed biogas, or CBG. E100 capability would take the engine beyond E20 petrol compatibility and align it with India’s push towards higher ethanol use and flex-fuel vehicles.
CNG and CBG applications could complement India’s renewable-gas programme. As covered in our earlier reporting, the Rs 23,731 crore GOBARdhan scheme aims to expand domestic Bio-CNG production, with blending targets rising from 3% in FY2026-27 to 5% from FY2028-29 onwards.
Lightweight Engineering Could Complement The Engine
Suzuki’s broader lightweight engineering work could further support performance and efficiency. Its approximately 100 kg weight-saving programme is associated with future kei-car development and offsets anticipated weight increases, rather than confirming a 100 kg reduction for DITC-powered Maruti SUVs.
However, if related weight-saving technologies reach models using the new turbo engine, they could improve power-to-weight ratios, acceleration and mileage without requiring additional power. For Maruti Suzuki, the opportunity lies in combining stronger petrol performance with efficiency and a wider choice of fuels.
