Maruti Suzuki has achieved a new export milestone, with cumulative shipments of Jimny 5-door, Fronx and e Vitara from India to Japan crossing the 1 lakh unit mark. The achievement is significant as Japan has emerged as Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market.

The three models have also helped Suzuki become the No. 1 vehicle importer in Japan during FY2025-26. Nearly all vehicles imported by Suzuki into its home market during the financial year were manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India.

Fronx Started Japan Export Push

Among the three models, Fronx was the first to be shipped to Japan, with exports commencing in August 2024. It was followed by Jimny 5-door in December 2024. Maruti Suzuki expanded the portfolio further in September 2025 with exports of e Vitara, its first battery electric vehicle.

Both Jimny 5-door and e Vitara are manufactured exclusively in India, highlighting the growing role of Maruti Suzuki’s Indian operations within Suzuki’s global manufacturing network. While India has traditionally been a major manufacturing base for Suzuki’s domestic operations, the company is increasingly using the country to produce vehicles for international markets as well.

Japan Is Maruti Suzuki’s Second-Largest Export Market

Growing demand for these India-made models has resulted in Japan becoming Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market by volume in FY2025-26. It has retained that position during the April-August period of FY2026-27 as well. The development is particularly noteworthy considering Japan is Suzuki’s home market and has a highly developed domestic automotive manufacturing industry.

India-made Jimny, Fronx and e Vitara have also contributed to Suzuki becoming the No. 1 vehicle importer in Japan during FY2025-26, ahead of other international automakers. Maruti Suzuki-manufactured vehicles accounted for nearly 100% of Suzuki’s vehicle imports into Japan during the period.

India Becomes Important Suzuki Export Hub

Commenting on the milestone, Maruti Suzuki MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said crossing 1 lakh exports of the three models demonstrates the acceptance of India-manufactured vehicles among Japanese customers. “The milestone of over 1 lakh exports of Jimny 5-door, FRONX, and eVITARA to Japan is a powerful endorsement of India’s manufacturing excellence,” Takeuchi said.

He also highlighted the changing nature of the India-Japan automotive relationship. Suzuki originally entered India to manufacture vehicles for the domestic market. More than four decades later, Maruti Suzuki is now producing vehicles in India that are being exported to customers in Suzuki’s home country.
