Car Retail Sales Cross 5 Lakh Units in October 2026 despite 14.23% YoY decline

India’s passenger vehicle retail sales stood at 5,07,768 units in October 2026, registering a 14.23% year-on-year (YoY) decline compared to 5,92,032 units sold in October 2025. However, sales recorded a strong month-on-month (MoM) growth of 18.86% over the 4,27,213 units retailed in September 2026.

This YoY decline can largely be attributed to a shift in the festive calendar, with key occasions such as Dhanteras and Diwali falling in November this year. Dhanteras will be celebrated on November 6, followed by Diwali on November 8, 2026, pushing a significant portion of festive vehicle purchases into the following month. However, despite the annual decline, October 2026 recorded the third-highest October retail sales in history, highlighting the underlying strength of this segment.
