‘One Night Only’ Trailer: Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro Charm Their Way Through a Rom-Com Twist on ‘The Purge’

In Will Gluck's new rom-com, premarital sex is only legal one night each year. Guess when our would-be lovebirds meet?

Admittedly, this one took me a minute to parse. When exactly is the least romantic night of the year? That question is key, because that’s when Will Gluck‘s (“Anyone but You,” “Easy A,” rom-com king) latest, “One Night Only,” is set. New Year’s Eve? Valentine’s Day? Tax Day? Alas, the fun and flirty looks on display in the film‘s first trailer sure don’t scream “WINTER TIME IN NEW YORK CITY.”

But, now? I’ve got it. It’s not New Year’s Eve! It’s not even a recognized day; it’s a whole new world. Mostly, it’s like “The Purge.” For single people. And premarital sex.

The film follows Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, who star as, per Universal Studios, “two love-starved strangers who crash into each other in an ever-so-slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex.”

While this first trailer doesn’t quite expound on this unique concept, the duo seems charming enough (and with actual chemistry!) to sell just about anything. How many times can we declare the rom-com back? What’s one more, for good measure? The rom-com is back! Now with added high-concept!

For a little more detail, we shall refer to the film’s official synopsis: “Recently dumped Owen and hopeful romantic Allie might be the only two singles in the city looking for more than just a quick encounter. They both feel a spark when they meet, but a series of missteps and side quests complicate their night, keeping them apart. As they each race toward and away from each other across the city, they just might discover that the one thing they want most is closer than they think.”

The film is co-written, directed, and produced by Gluck, based on a script from Travis Braun. The film is produced by Gluck through his company, Olive Bridge Entertainment, and by Olive Bridge VP Jacqueline Monetta. The film also stars Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ziwe, Ben Marshall, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton.
