‘Love Story’ Trailer: Ryan Murphy Heads Back to the ’90s with John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette
Following the struggles JFK's son and his wife Bessette experienced in the public eye, "Love Story" is the first installment in an intended anthology series.
by Wilson Chapman · IndieWireIn Ryan Murphy‘s world, it’s always the ’90s. Since the success of “American Crime Story” Season 1, which chronicled the 1995 murder trial of O.J. Simpson, the intensely prolific showrunner and producer has used his many anthology series to dig into the tabloid fodder and scandals that defined that decade, from the Clinton-Lewinsky Impeachment scandal to the Menendez brothers’ murder trial. With his latest show “Love Story,” he’s looking at one of the decade’s most iconic celebrity relationships: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. FX has released the first trailer for the series, which can be watched below.
Soundtracked by a cover of Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels” by modern indie pop artist Japanese Breakfast, the trailer of “Love Story” emphasizes many of Murphy’s favorite preoccupations: beautiful people, glamorous celebrity life, and the examination of the crushing weight behind fame and notoriety. The trailer starts with Kennedy and Bessette’s first meeting, as they develop a relationship that becomes an immediate media obsession. While their lives seem perfect on the surface, the trailer portrays Bessette as struggling with the pressures of marrying into the Kennedy political dynasty, and the erosion of privacy she experiences from being catapulted suddenly into the the public eye.
Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon lead the cast of the series as JFK Jr. and Bessette. The series additionally stars Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein, Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy, Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, Leila George as Kelly Klein, Sydney Lemmon as Lauren Bessette, and Constance Zimmer as Ann Marie Messina.
Since the announcement of “Love Story” last year, the series has faced criticism from Jack Schlossberg, nephew of JFK Jr., who criticized the series for not consulting the Kennedy family during production and accused it of profiting off the family in a “grotesque” way. Murphy has defended the show from Schlossberg’s accusations.
Inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s book “Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,” “Love Story” is created by Connor Hines and executive produced by Murphy, Hines, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Eric Kovtun, Nissa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Monica Levinson, Kim Rosenstock, D.V. DeVincentis, Tanase Popa, and Max Winkler, who additionally directed the pilot. The series is produced by 20th Television.
The first three episodes on “Love Story” will premiere simultaneously on FX and Hulu on February 12, followed by weekly episode releases on Thursdays. The series comes less than a month after Murphy’s sci-fi thriller series “The Beauty” premiered on FX. Later this year, FX will also premiere “The Shards,” Murphy’s adaptation of the horror novel by Bret Easton Ellis.
