Noah Baumbach Heads from Netflix to Warner Bros.’ Clockwork with New First-Look Film Deal

He will write, direct, and produce his next movie alongside Margot Robbie's LuckyChap and David Heyman.

Noah Baumbach has signed a new first-look film deal with Warner Bros. and its specialized label, Clockwork. The movie will see him exit his deal with Netflix, which he’s been under for the last five years. The deal with Clockwork is a producing deal that will begin in 2027.

Baumbach will write, direct, and produce his next film, with details currently under wraps, to be released by Clockwork and produced by David Heyman and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap banner. This will also be Baumbach’s first movie to be released theatrically since 2015.

Baumbach’s last four movies have all been released by Netflix, starting with “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),” and his film deal has encompassed the Oscar-nominated “Marriage Story” as well as “White Noise” and “Jay Kelly.” Neither of those last two turned out to be awards players, and there were grumblings about the cost of “White Noise.” But ultimately Baumbach signed his deal under former Netflix film chief Scott Stuber, and current chief Dan Lin has veered toward more populist projects.

Baumbach also has ties to Warner Bros., as he co-wrote “Barbie” with Greta Gerwig and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Other scripts include “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,” both with Wes Anderson.

Clockwork is still getting its feet wet under former Neon executive Christian Parkes, and it has new films from Park Chan-wook and Sean Baker in the pipeline.
