Adam Wingard‘s career has taken plenty of twists and turns over the past two decades, but he always seems to adapt to the latest landscape of genre filmmaking. He steadily climbed the ladder from his microbudget debut features to mainstream breakouts like “You’re Next” and “The Guest” before tackling some of the biggest studio I.P. in Hollywood (with varying results) on projects like “Blair Witch,” “Death Note,” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.” Now, at a moment when originality appears to reign supreme, he’s teaming up with A24 for an intriguing new idea.

Wingard reunites with his frequent co-writer Simon Barrett on “Onslaught,” an original thriller about a single mother living in a trailer park who is forced to battle a mysterious threat that emerges from a neighboring military base. The film boasts an impressive ensemble of stars, including Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Alex Pereira, Michael Biehn, Drew Starkey, Rebecca Hall, Eric Wareheim, Maurice Greene, and Reginald VelJohnson.

Unsurprisingly for a film built around such a mysterious premise, plot details for “Onslaught” have been kept under wraps until now. A brief official synopsis reads: “When a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers break loose in the desert, a badass Army sniper must unleash hell to protect her young daughter.”

During a recent interview with IndieWire promoting his role in Netflix’s “The Terror,” Stevens teased the project, praising Wingard’s creativity and Arjona’s blistering performance in the lead role.

“Ultimately, it’s Adam Wingard back on form, returning to a batshit action-thriller in the desert, which is where I first met him and fell in love with him,” he said. “This time, Adria Arjona, who is incredible, is our lead and has done an amazing job. People are going to really enjoy what she’s brought to that movie, I won’t say any more than that. But my contribution is, typically, bonkers.”

While he’s currently back in the indie space, Wingard is not ruling out a return to the Monsterverse. He previously told IndieWire that he’s hoping to direct a third movie with Godzilla and King Kong that would follow up on the events of “The New Empire.”

“I know what I would like to do with the next one,” he said in 2024. “There’s definitely more ground to cover.”

An A24 release, “Onslaught” opens in theaters on Friday, September 4. Watch the trailer below.
