Nottingham Forest player ratings as duo catch the eye in FA Cup win over Luton Town
by Sarah Clapson · NottinghamshireLiveNottingham Forest progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-0 win over Luton Town on the banks of the Trent.
Goals from Ryan Yates and Ramon Sosa proved enough to topple the Hatters in an entertaining tie. Victory ensured the Reds made it seven wins in a row in all competitions for the first time since 2006.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side made a bright start, with Jota Silva and Ramon Sosa causing problems for the visitors early on. Taiwo Awoniyi tried his luck and Yates rattled the bar as the Reds continued to push for an opening. Goalkeeper Carlos Miguel didn’t have a great deal to do but was on hand when required to keep out Liam Walsh and Isaiah Jones.
Five minutes before the interval, the hosts finally got their breakthrough. Yates headed home from Sosa’s cross to put his team 1-0 up.
Sosa then got on the scoresheet himself in the second half. Teed up by Jota, he slotted past Thomas Kaminski from close range with 68 minutes gone to double Forest’s advantage and kill the game off. Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at the City Ground.

Carlos Miguel: Didn’t really have a great deal to do on his second appearance for the club. Pulled off a couple of handy saves in the first half and will look forward to another runout in the next round. Rating: 8/10
Eric da Silva Moreira: Once again, showed he looks a good prospect. Still a little rough around the edges but can certainly be one for the future. Did well. Rating: 8/10
Willy Boly: A commanding display from the centre-back. Marshalled a new-look defence well and tried to cause problems at the other end when he had the opportunity. Rating: 8/10
Morato: Solid as always from the Brazilian. Luton didn’t cause the Reds too many issues but he did what was required. Was always going to take something special for him to concede, given his impressive record so far. Rating: 8/10
Harry Toffolo: Has always given his all when called upon, and it was the same again in this third round tie. Got plenty of love from the home fans as another clean-sheet was notched up by the Reds. Rating: 7.5/10
Alex Moreno: Back in the starting XI and seemed keen to make the most of his opportunity. Made some good forward runs, even if they didn’t always come to anything. Rating: 8/10
Ryan Yates: Crossbar was probably still wobbling from his earlier attempt when the skipper gave his team the lead just before the break. Took his header very well to give the ‘goggles’ celebration an airing. Rating: 8.5/10
James Ward-Prowse: Generally neat and tidy on the ball in a steady enough performance by the West Ham United loanee. Set-piece delivery was good. Still has a fight on his hands to start in the league, though. Rating: 7.5/10
Jota Silva: Set the tone from the off by being a bundle of energy right from the start. Charging run and ball for Sosa summed up what he is about. A really good display. Rating: 8.5/10
Taiwo Awoniyi: A much-needed start for the front man, who still looked a little bit rusty. Had a couple of sights of goal but just couldn’t find the right finish. Will benefit from the minutes, though. Rating: 7/10
Ramon Sosa: A goal and an assist for the Paraguayan on a good afternoon’s work at the City Ground. Set up Yates nicely and was then on hand to stab the ball home to make the result safe. Rating: 8/10
Subs
Chris Wood (for Awoniyi, 74mins): Didn’t really get a chance to add to his goals tally during his time on the pitch. Will hope it is a different story when Liverpool come to town on Tuesday night. Rating: 7/10
Callum Hudson-Odoi (for Sosa, 74mins): Almost made an immediate impact by having a go with a trademark effort shortly after coming off the bench. Wasn’t too far away, either. Rating: 7.5/10
Anthony Elanga (for Jota, 74mins): Fresh legs added an injection of energy in the final 15 minutes. Game was pretty much over with by that point anyway. Rating: 7/10
Nicolas Dominguez (for Yates, 74mins): Did his job in the final quarter of an hour but it was pretty comfortable by that point. Nuno has a big decision to make for his midfield pick against the league leaders, though. Rating: 7/10
Danilo (for Ward-Prowse, 85mins): City Ground got to its feet to welcome the Brazilian back. First appearance since breaking his ankle on the opening day of the campaign. Rating: 7/10
Subs not used: Sels, Anderson, Milenkovic, Abbott.
