Police were called to a wooded area next to the A617 Rainworth Bypass

Aerial photos have shown the extent of a cordon next to a Nottinghamshire bypass where human remains were discovered as police are expected to remain at the scene for several more days.

Police were called to a wooded area next to the A617 Rainworth Bypass on Saturday, May 23, after skeletal remains were discovered by members of the public.

On Wednesday, May 27, Nottinghamshire Police said detectives believed they had established the identity of the man whose remains were found.

The force said while formal identification is yet to take place, his family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Aerial photos of the cordon show the wooded area has been taped off from both sides, with two forensic tents and several police cars dotted around the cordon.

Detectives and specialist archaeologists have been at the site since the discovery and will remain there for "a number of days".

Police said a post-mortem will be carried out in due course to formally identify the man and his cause of death.

Detective Inspector Stuart Barson said: "Although formal identification is yet to take place, we believe this man has now been identified.

"Specialist officers are supporting his family at what we know will be a difficult time for them.

“As we work to understand how and when this man died, we would like to thank the public for their assistance and reassure them that there is no wider risk to them."
