Baby names set to go 'extinct' in 2024 including once hugely popular choice
The baby name experts at BabyCentre have come up with a list of the most endangered names for boys and girls in 2024 - and some of the once popular choices are set to go completely extinct
by George Allen, Nicola Roy · NottinghamshireLiveIf you're expecting a new arrival this year, choosing the perfect name can be a daunting task. A great starting point for inspiration is the annual list of most popular names.
Pop culture, films, music and other trends often introduce new names, while others can quickly fall out of favour. BabyCentre's baby name experts have analysed the data from 2022-23 and identified the names that have seen the biggest drop in popularity, putting them at risk of disappearing completely this year.
Some of these names were once very common, but changing trends mean they are now being overlooked in favour of newer options. American boy's names like Keanu, Ryder and Buddy have seen a decline in popularity, as have Welsh names such as Griff and Bowen, with surnames as first names becoming less popular recently.
For girls, unusual spellings seem to be on the way out, with names like Kiera, Alyssia and Elyse losing popularity in 2023, potentially dropping even further this year. While some traditional girl's names like Ivy and Ada were popular last year, others - including Flo, Vivienne and Peggy - were not so common.
Here's a rundown of the top 20 most endangered names for babies in 2024, split by gender. The list includes both boys and girls names that are at risk of becoming extinct this year, reports the Express.
