Snow is expected in some parts of the country in the coming days

Five 'emergency' items drivers told to have in car before cold spell and snow arrives

Drivers are being urged to prepare for wintry conditions by stocking their vehicles with five "emergency" items ahead of Sunday. GM Direct Hire experts have emphasised the importance of having a winter kit in cars, as snow is expected across large parts of the UK according to the Met Office.

They advised: "Ensure you have an emergency kit in your car, including essentials like a high-visibility jacket, a torch, and a mobile phone charger in case of breakdown."

Additionally, Ali Ingram-Seal from Saga highlighted the necessity of carrying blankets and spare clothes to stay warm. The AA also offered guidance, stating: "If you're delayed because of bad weather (or a weather-related incident), it's a good idea to let your loved ones know. It'll save them worrying and stop any distracting texts and phone calls coming in while you're behind the wheel."

They added a reminder: "Just remember not to use a handheld phone while driving. Pull into a safe rest stop to make a call or ask a passenger to do it for you."

Although little snow is expected to settle at low levels during the day, accumulations of 1 to 3 cm could occur overnight in some areas within the warning zone, with 5 to 10 cm possible on higher ground above 300 metres by Monday morning, reports Birmingham Live.

With the drop in temperatures leading to icy conditions, Age Scotland's chief executive Katherine Crawford has issued a plea for community support: "There are also simple steps we can all take to ensure no one feels they are facing this period alone. Bad weather may make it difficult for people to get out for essential shopping or medical appointments, so we'd urge everyone to check in on older family, friends and neighbours during this period to find out if they need any extra support.

She highlighted the impact of small acts of kindness, stating, "A friendly phone call or an offer to help with shopping, collecting prescriptions or de-icing paths could be a lifeline for someone who feels isolated at home during this cold spell."
