MANILA, Philippines (Updated 10:42 a.m.) — Tropical Storm Caloy has weakened into a tropical depression as it continues moving west-northwest inside the Philippine area of responsibility, PAGASA said Sunday, May 10.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, the state weather bureau said Caloy, named “Hagupit” internationally, was last spotted about 860 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao.

The cyclone was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 70 kph while moving northwestward at 15 kph.

PAGASA earlier said the trough or extension of Caloy may bring rains over Eastern Visayas and parts of Mindanao beginning Sunday night.

The weather bureau said the system may continue weakening and could further downgrade into a low pressure area by Monday, May 11.

Rains still possible

Despite the weakening, PAGASA said rains associated with Caloy’s trough may continue affecting Eastern Visayas and Mindanao until Tuesday before conditions improve by midweek.

“This afternoon or evening, posibleng humina na itong si Caloy into a tropical depression category,” weather specialist Veronica Torres said in a 5 a.m. weather broadcast. (This afternoon or evening, Caloy may weaken into a tropical depression.)

Meanwhile, easterlies continue to affect Luzon, including Metro Manila, bringing partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening.

Another LPA monitored

PAGASA is also monitoring another low pressure area outside PAR.

As of 8 a.m., the LPA was located about 2,385 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao.

The weather bureau said the system has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
