MANILA, Philippines — The trough of Tropical Storm Caloy may bring rains over Eastern Visayas and parts of Mindanao beginning Sunday night, May 10, PAGASA said.

Caloy, formerly named “Hagupit” internationally before entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility, was last spotted at 3 a.m. about 925 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao, according to PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres.

The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 80 kph while moving west-northwest at 15 kph.

PAGASA said the storm has no direct effect on the country for now, but its trough or extension may trigger rains over eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao starting Sunday night.

Caloy may weaken

PAGASA said Caloy is expected to continue moving west-northwest and may weaken into a tropical depression by Sunday afternoon or evening.

“This afternoon or evening, posibleng humina na itong si Caloy into a tropical depression category,” Torres said.

The weather bureau said the system may further weaken into a low pressure area by Monday, May 11.

Rains associated with Caloy’s trough may persist over Eastern Visayas and Mindanao until Tuesday, before conditions improve by midweek.

Meanwhile, easterlies continue to affect Luzon, including Metro Manila, bringing partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening.

Sea conditions

PAGASA said moderate seas with waves of up to 2.5 meters may affect the eastern seaboards of Northern Samar and Eastern Samar, Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands, Batanes, the western seaboard of the Babuyan Islands and the northwestern coast of Ilocos Norte.

Waves of up to 2 meters may also affect the eastern coasts of Cagayan, Isabela, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental.

Small sea vessels and motor bancas were advised to take precautions and avoid sailing during risky conditions.

PAGASA is also monitoring another low pressure area outside PAR, located about 2,705 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao. The weather bureau said it has a low chance of developing into a storm and is not expected to affect the country.
