Calgary police shooting: suspect found dead in river after Edworthy Park manhunt

A suspect has been found dead after a Calgary police officer was shot during a traffic stop, prompting a dangerous-person alert and major police response near Edworthy Park.

The incident began at about 11:45 AM on Monday in the Spruce Cliff area when police stopped a vehicle and “an occupant of the vehicle fired shots,” according to Calgary police.

Police said an officer was struck twice before the male suspect fled on foot into Edworthy Park. A police helicopter tracked him as officers pursued.

“It is believed the suspect continued to actively shoot at pursuing members and nearby civilians,” police said.

Investigators believe the suspect then carjacked a vehicle and drove through the park until it became stuck. Police later found him dead in the river.

Insp. Darren Smith said the suspect “discharged rounds at our officers and our officers returned fire.”

Smith said the suspect “was subject to a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” but added investigators could not yet determine whether police gunfire also struck him.

The injured officer is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police issued a dangerous-person alert during the incident and urged nearby residents to remain indoors.

The alert was later cancelled, although parts of Edworthy Park remained closed.
