Canada faces World Cup concern as Alphonso Davies suffers fresh hamstring injury

Canada captain Alphonso Davies could miss part of the FIFA World Cup after Bayern Munich confirmed the defender will be sidelined for four to five weeks with a left hamstring injury.

Davies appeared to hurt his leg late in Bayern’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday.

The setback comes just weeks before Canada opens its World Cup campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12.

Canada Soccer said it is working closely with Bayern Munich to support the player’s recovery.

“We’re in close contact with Alphonso and remain in touch with Bayern’s medical team following his recent setback,” Canada Soccer said in a statement provided to TSN.

“Our focus is on supporting his recovery and providing every available resource, including specialized soft tissue expertise, to give him the best possible pathway back to full fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup.”

Davies has already endured a difficult recovery period after missing nine months with an ACL injury suffered while playing for Canada in 2025.

His latest injury raises major questions for head coach Jesse Marsch ahead of the tournament, including who could replace Davies on Canada’s left side.

Potential options include Richie Laryea, Marcelo Flores and Tajon Buchanan, although several Canadian players are also managing injuries ahead of the competition.
