North Carolina DC Steve Belichick steps away on medical leave Bill Belichick says

North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is on indefinite medical leave, head coach Bill Belichick announced on Thursday.

Bill Belichick did not disclose the reason for the leave or say whether his son would return in time for North Carolina's season opener against TCU in Ireland on 29 August.

The coach said only that they "look forward to getting him back as soon as possible."

In Steve Belichick's absence, the defensive coaching staff will share responsibilities until further notice.

"We coach defense collectively as staff and we will continue to do that," Bill Belichick said.

He added that if Steve Belichick is unavailable for the opening game, the programme would then consider appointing an interim defensive coordinator.

Steve Belichick, 39, joined North Carolina's coaching staff under his father and served as defensive coordinator last season.

Before moving to the college ranks, he spent several years coaching with Bill Belichick at the New England Patriots.

According to ESPN, the university last month placed general manager Michael Lombardi on leave while an investigation into his conduct continues.
