Trump says Iranian uranium should be destroyed under US supervision

US President Donald Trump has renewed calls for Iran to surrender its enriched uranium stockpile to the United States or agree to its destruction under international oversight.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, Trump said the material should either be transferred to the US or destroyed in coordination with Iranian authorities and nuclear monitors.

“The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event,” Trump wrote.

The comments come as negotiations continue over Iran’s nuclear programme and wider efforts to end tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Iran has repeatedly rejected demands to transfer its enriched uranium abroad, insisting its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes.

This comes as the United States Central Command said US forces carried out “self-defence strikes” in southern Iran on Monday, targeting missile launch sites and boats near the Strait of Hormuz amid an ongoing ceasefire.

Trump’s latest remarks are expected to further complicate ongoing diplomatic talks, which have focused heavily on uranium enrichment, sanctions relief and regional security issues.
